Having read the author's prior work "Austenland" I was somewhat disappointed in this Austenland themed story. For the most part it was more Agatha Christie and less Regency England than one would expect from an Austen themed novel. I found the central character Charlotte rather juvenile and annoying at times. That a woman who'd had a husband and two children would fall into this sort of starry-eyed, heart-pounding romance was irritating and fairly unrealistic. Given that the whole thing is supposed to be a fantasy this could be expected. However, the ending was just too sugary and sappy for grown, professional woman with teenaged children. Ugh. The plotline of this tale was also very awkward and forced. It was supposed to be a resemblance of "Northanger Abbey", but instead strays into Agatha Christie meets a "Murder She Wrote" primetime T.V. predictable plotline. The biggest problem was, I didn't really "get" the character of Charlotte. She is supposed to be likable, but for some reason isn't. For me, she held zero charm. The other characters are so under developed I really didn't care what happened to them one way or the other. The men were either jerks or "smoldering". Hale could use a few more adjectives. I knew this was fluffy fiction and chick-lit, but it was pretty mediocre even for that genre. It's lovely to read about women who are not in the "socially acceptable Goldilocks zone" of 15-30 age bracket and who are not just the heroines of the story but also women with children, a past, a career, and who get a wonderful love story to boot. I especially loved that Charlotte was her own woman and very different from Jane of the first book Charlotte had her own principles, she wasn't clever at witty repartee but owned it like a BOSS, and was terribly nice about all the things the rest of us would have ripped her ex apart for. Her character growth from submissive ex-wife to mama bear at the end had me howling. Anyone who's ever been in the receiving end of cheating will understand Charlotte and Janes' situation perfectly.
Enjoyed the little mystery of Mary and the dead nuns, the reversal with Eddie, and meeting Miss Charming again even if the waning is a little abrupt. Still... It ends how we all wish our own personal fairy tales would end and there's no shame in enjoying the romantic, happily ever after Charlotte gets.
I hardly know what to say for this review. This book is part romance, part murder mystery, and a whole lot of confusing. It is not confusing because there is any difficulty in understanding the plot. No. It is confusing because I had a hard time figuring out exactly where Shannon Hale was going with this. I could never feel comfortable with any of the characters for this entire book. Everyone seemed suspect in some way, and while that may be fine when you are reading a strictly murder mystery book, it just kept me on edge for too much of the story in order to feel the things I should have been feeling for the romance part of the story. I think that if the story had stuck to one particular genre and stayed with that it might have been okay. Maybe. I don't know. I just know that as written it did not work for me at all.
Midnight in Austenland is a companion novel to the popular Austenland novel. I finished that novel this week as well, and while I found many things to criticize in that story, overall I thought that that story was super cute ... cute enough to overlook the problems with the story. In this story the cuteness was just not there. Unfortunately when you take out the cuteness factor it REALLY harms the overall story. I think the author was TRYING to be cute, but when you stick cuteness in the middle of murder and attempted murder scenes it just seems utterly ridiculous. A person has been murdered. Shouldn't the police be called right away? Wouldn't that be an excellent reason to abandon your fake Austen experience for a day or so? And yet everyone just keeps up their fantasy play time. Sometimes they discuss what happened. Most of the time they do not. It ended up seeming very weird.
Once again, I think that the big problem with this story is the confusion between what is real and what is make believe. Everyone in the story is playing a role. The couples are scripted out from the very beginning. From Austenland we know that even the "unscripted" relationships can end up as having been scripted without one person's knowledge. I never felt like I could place my loyalty with any particular person because I had no idea who was acting a part and who was just being themselves. That harmed my experience as a reader and made it hard to root for any particular romantic alliances. The cuteness of the first book in the series allowed me to overlook this problem. This story chooses to take a darker and more serious tone, and that made this struggle to know what was reality a bigger problem.
I thought that the idea for this book sounded intriguing. Unfortunately, the execution failed on this one. I can only give this story two stars ... it was okay.
I picked this up after seeing the movie Austenland, starring Kerri Russell, which I thought was a sweetheart of a movie. While Midnight in Austenland doesn’t have the main heroine from the movie, it does have several returning smaller characters, including her loud friend Elizabeth Charming who practically springs to life right off the pages of this story. Charlotte herself seemed too practical for a place like Austenland and I often wondered what she was doing there since she kept reminding herself that the place wasn’t real, keeping herself from true immersion in the world created by the park, not to mention that she chafed at being apart from her children, and she seemed to only be a cursory fan of Austen. But then I can’t suppose she would have gone anywhere else since she had so few hobbies aside from gardening. I did like Eddie since he made a wonderful confidant for her while the audience couldn’t tell if he could actually be trusted or not since he was just one of the actors. And, yes, I did love the mystery, suspense, and especially the chaste, old-fashioned romance. Mallory with his characteristic Byron/Heathcliffe dark brooding was fascinating. I know others might complain about there being a mystery in their Regency romance, but being a fan of PBS Mystery, I love it! (even though you could spot the guilty party long before the end).
